Excerpt: Appropriately, it is Moss’s
respect and admiration for nature and
her understanding of the vagaries of
life that animate her craft. Gourds
appeal to her in large measure
because they are a completely natural
product seemingly waiting to be
enhanced; they are, in Moss’s mind,
“nature’s organic pottery.” Like
snowflakes and people, they are also
individually unique. “In fact, some of
the obscure shapes inspire ingenious
thinking and design.”
As a self-taught artist, Moss is largely
directed by an intuition or inspiration
that manifests in what seems
appropriate for the shape of the gourd.
Arguably, Moss’s most impressive and
vibrant work is found in geometric and
symmetrical designs finished in
lustrous colors and illuminating
textures. While Moss’s pieces bear
more resemblance to pottery than
gourd, it’s important to remember that
the gourd itself first inspired the end
result. As in nature and life, Moss
says, “Each gourd’s imperfections
individualize their uniqueness.” Editor
